Needlepoint Double Star Stitch: Method of Completion

  1. You can complete the double star stitch by either completing step 1 first and then moving onto step 2 or the reverse. You will need to be mindful of the fact that there will be eight stitches going through one central hole.

  2. To work the pattern, start at the bottom left hand corner and come up in an empty hole at 1 and go down at 2, pulling the thread/yarn slightly toward the hole you come up at.

  3. Work the stitches in a counter-clock direction, always coming up in an empty whole and going down towards the center.

  4. You might find that using an awl or a knitting needle to enlarge the whole will help the thread to go through the hole smoother.  It will also help you to keep the size of the hole more uniform.  Just be careful not to split existing thread/yarns in the hole.

  5. The working of Step 2 is shown to be completed in a different color but you can use the same color yarn/thread as you started with in step one.  Adding a different color for step two produces a different effect that you may or may not want to use.

Double Star Stitch Characteristics:

Best suited for: borders, backings, geometric and flower designs

Considerations:

  • Slow to work since careful attention must be paid to the direction of the stitches.

  • Depending on the yarn or thread used, the stitch will be medium in texture and relatively strong in pattern.

  • Use different color and thickness of yarn or thread for greater impact or interest.

  • See how an interesting pattern can be formed by combining 6 double star stitches.
