Needlepoint Starfish Stitch: Method of Completion

  1. Work the starfish stitch patterns by starting at the bottom left corner. Come up in an empty hole at 1 and go down at 2, pulling the thread slightly towards the hole you have come up at.

  2. Follow the pattern in a counter-clockwise direction and pull the thread slightly towards the hole you come up at, each time you passed through the center hole for only the first 4 stitches.

  3. You will notice that all the stitches used to make up the pattern travel diagonally across the canvas threads. 8 of the 12 stitches used do not pass through the central hole.

  4. Even though only 4 of the 12 stitches travel through a central hole, you might want to use an awl or knitting needle to loosen the whole. This will help the yarn to pass through easier and without snagging the stitches that have already been laid.

  5. You might want to experiment and use different color yarn for each starfish stitch pattern.

Starfish stitch Characteristics:

Best suited for: design and accent elements

Considerations:

Depending on the yarn or thread used and the fabric/canvas count on which the pattern is applied, the texture created will be relatively light and the strength of the pattern medium.

Experiment to see which effect you like the best.

Use different color and thickness of yarn for greater impact or interest.
